As the calm, intelligent and
self-possessed wife of a successful London surgeon, Constance
Middleton appears rooted in a very happy marriage. But when rumors
surface of her husband having an affair with her best friend,
Constance’s family and friends are thrown into a frenzy as to how to
break the news to the presumably unsuspecting wife. It is
Constance, however, who makes the first move, shocking all and
proving that she holds more than a few cards up her sleeve. Written
in 1926, this W. Somerset Maugham classic comedy of manners is often
considered his greatest work for the stage. Packed with wit,
surprise and humor, Maugham delights with the story of one practical
woman’s motivated rise to overcome her societal position as “the
modern wife.”
